After serving in the military for over a decade, I’ve become very familiar with the concept of the individual within the collective. As a military unit, soldiers could be added and subtracted without changing it’s wholeness. Each voice was singular, but to a far more powerful degree, each was a crucial part of the collective. Both exist simultaneously – the contrast between one massive thing and the many integral parts that compose it.
For a myriad of reason, this concept had greater meaning in 2020. We embarked upon a difficult journey as a nation and collective community – and as individuals.
And because life requires contrast, we must understand a thing’s opposite before we can appreciate that thing itself. While wrought with uncertainty and heartache, I believe that year also brought out the best in so many.
This piece is a reflection of the year that was 2020, of how we are all part of something bigger than ourselves, and of how I can’t help but hope – to look ahead and see an expansive horizon.

Come Fly Away With Me is a series of wall-hung art that is a visual recollection of my days as a pilot.
The beginning of a journey about traveling from one place to the next, the lines are flight routes, interweaving between boxes. When rolled out, the accompanying map book is the same size as the wall hanging.
Pages are made from old aviation maps, torn up, pulped, and then pressed into hand-made paper. It represents an aviator's way to condense maps of large areas into a small cockpit.

Military Patchwork Flag
A patchwork flag made of donated military uniforms, this installation celebrates though who have served, both in and out of uniform.
Uniforms tell the story of where we’ve been –
of jungles and deserts;
arctic tundra and barren landscapes;
of high skies and high seas.
They show our awards
and hide our scars.
They’ve been soiled with blood;
with sweat;
with tears.
They’ve come out clean on the other side.
Stories that shape the fabric of our experience,
theirs are the threads that bind us.

Patriotic Poker Box
“Patriot Poker” is my interpretation of the American Flag, a symbol which has held significant meaning for me after serving in the Army for over a decade. I wanted it to be a homage to the flag, but not something that was too literal. Mahogany, ash, and walnut represent red, white, and blue respectively.
Looking at the top of the box from different angles, the stripes appear straight from some standpoints and as if they are converging into the star from others. The stripes are evenly spaced, but the orientation of the ash grain gives the illusion that the red mahogany strips are angled. It gives the feeling of the flag waving in the wind.

Flying in the Wind
The American Flag has always held special meaning for me and has found its way into my work in various forms. From Patriotic Poker to some of my encaustic mixed media pieces, this symbol of freedom, sacrifice, and honor is emerging as a starting point from which many of my pieces evolve.
Flying in the Wind is a 3-dimensional wall-hung piece. Walnut strips are cut at different angles and then pieced back together to form the 3D shape of the flag waving in the wind. The paper is made of ripped up Army aviation maps that are pressed, dried, and then cut to form the stars and stripes.

Folded Flags
When a soldier is killed, the flag is carefully folded into the shape of a tri-colored hat, reminiscent of the hats worn by the soldiers who fought the war of the revolution and won American independence. “Folded Flags” is a wall-hung piece that acts as a reminder of those men and women whose family member has been handed a folded flag because of their sacrifice.
